Short Treks: Calypso

After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself to be on board a deserted ship, his only companion and hope for survival, an A.I. computer interface.

This Short Trek is a retelling of the myth of Calypso, from Homer’s Odyssey, where the main character/hero is rescued by a being or in this case an A.I. who cares for him, nurses him back to health and over an extended period of time bonds with him. This telling changes the hero from Odysseus to Craft.

Over time the ship’s AI and Craft form a sorta relationship and watch the film funny face. Specifically the final scene where the main characters dance while the female lead wears a wedding dress.

In the myth of Calypso, she tries for 7 years to make Odysseus her husband for eternity, since on her island time does not pass. I believe the final dance scene of this episode represents the AI wanting Craft to remain with her forever.

“on the fifth Calypso sent him from the island after washing him and giving him some clean clothes. “

In this Short Trek Craft after having his dance with the ship as a hologram, is sent off to return to his family far away, with the ship replicating him a new uniform.
