Richard Belzer was a comedian, actor, and author who was a fixture of the entertainment industry for decades. Belzer was best known for his role as Detective John Munch in the hit television series, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which he played for over 20 years. As well as appearing in character in other series including Sesame Street, The X-Files, and a parody of his character in The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Born in 1944 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Belzer began his career as a stand-up comedian before transitioning to acting. He appeared in a number of films and television shows throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including the classic comedy film, Trading Places.
Belzer passed away in 2023 at the age of 78. Despite his passing, his legacy lives on through his iconic role as Detective Munch and his work as an author. Belzer authored several books, including his memoir, I Am Not a Cop!, and the novel, I Am the New Black. Belzer also was an avid conspiracy theory author cowriting several books on the subject.
He was known for his down-to-earth personality and approachability, continuing to perform stand-up comedy and making public appearances to meet with fans.
Belzer’s passing is a loss to the entertainment industry and to his many fans around the world. He will be remembered for his talent, his humor, and his dedication to making the world a better place.
