Con-nichiwa 2019 was billed as the “beach episode” with the big announcement last year that the con would be moving to the Starr Pass Resort. This was a major change from previous years which were held at the Tucson Convention Center. With this change the con also moved in time to mid-summer.
However with the move came bugs, and every con has its bugs. These bugs were however a detriment to the experience which I don’t hold against the organizers of the con, but more to the venue. When we arrived there was the issue of con-goers being told that photography was not allowed anywhere on the property, which upon clarification changed to no photography around the pools. This kinda defeated the purpose of the whole “beach episode” idea, especially when coupled with the hotel rule of no roaming the hotel without a cover-up, making cosplay swimsuits kinda not possible either.
Even with the bugs that came up, we still had fun, and people were happy that they didn’t have to make a long trek to the panel rooms, with them being right near registration and the vendor hall.
