The End of the Star Trek Reniassance

Today it was just announced that Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery is going to be it’s last.  This hurts me, a lot.

For the first time in my life, I felt I was actually a part of the main stream.  That I, as a life long nerd/geek/etc was seen as something for media to be made for and not just a niche side project.  While Star Trek: The Original Series was a cultural phenominon, by the time Star Trek: The Next Generation came around it was seen as cereberal and nerdy.

When we got Discovery, while there was arguement within the fandom over every little aspect (as there always was and always will be) it seemed like the networks got us.  Then they added Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and even Prodigy, and we were finally seen, but now they’re starting to chip away again, and who knows where they’ll stop.

Discovery was our first look into the far future of Star Trek, beyond the endings of Voyager and Deep Space Nine, while also seeing what else there was before James T. Kirk being the captain of the Enterprise without going all the way back to Archer and the NX-01.  They were finally filling in bits and pieces to make the unverse whole as well as extending it beyond and now that’s stopping.

So far we’ve learned of the past of Trek from Discovery:

  • Spock has a sister! (OMG!)
  • There was another form of faster than light travel beyond Warp.
  • Section 31 is even scarier than we ever knew.
  • Klingons be cray!
  • Killy be awesome!
  • Una/Number One wasn’t just a figment of our imagination.
  • Pike kicks ass.
  • Spock can smile.. and sing.
  • and outside of the universe, Rent actors are still the same.

I just hope Discovery gets a proper send off and not some BS like Enterprise did.

I’ve done the whole ‘not having Star Trek’ thing.  I spent weeks trying to get to see the premier episode of Enterprise when I was overseas after years of no Trek.  Picard is ending after this season too, and I’m afraid we’ll be quickly going back to the time of no Trek after only having the brief but amazing renissance we’ve just had.  Please don’t take us back to the time of no Trek.

Computer…End Program…
